Funnily enough, I can’t actually say whether this legendary Yorkville mainstay lives up to its name. Even though I love the old decor, the nice, comfortable atmosphere, and the welcoming, friendly service, I’ve never actually tried the coffee.

The main reason I go to the Coffee Mill is its famous Hungarian food — in particular, their goulash and schnitzel. In the wintertime, it’s exactly what you need for a homey warm-up. Add a side of dark rye toast, and you have a meal to remember. The popular tuna melt is good too, and even though I’m not a dessert aficionado, even I can tell their strudel is great. Basically, it’s old school, home cooked, comfort food. The portions are big, the staff give off a genuinely friendly, relaxed feeling, and, overall, the Mill is a great place to be.

Being affordable and consistent in Yorkville is hard to do, but after forty successful years on the block, Coffee Mill has withstood the test of time. They’ve also got a few bonuses on top of the great food, like a patio and even live music on weekends.
