Davenport and Dupont isn’t exactly where you’d expect to find one of Toronto’s more authentic Mexican joints, but strangely enough, that’s the area Playa Cabana calls home. Playa is the city’s independent answer to big Mexican fast food chains. The little thirty-seater place offers a small patio (which is okay — Dupont is fine, but it doesn’t have great panoramic views of the city by any stretch), a legitimate Mexican vibe, and a small, cozy atmosphere.
The place is always busy, so the food takes ages to arrive, but once it does, it’s great. Playa, not surprisingly owned by a chef, offers classic Mexican dishes like fish tacos and burritos, serving the typical items in an authentic style. The joint also has an extensive cocktail list featuring some premium tequilas like Tromba.
The staff are great — very friendly and relaxed — and everyone really does seem to care that you’re happy. The prices are average, and the portions are huge enough for two people to actually split sometimes. It’s a great place to get some delicious, authentic Mexican food.
